Meet The Team

Jo Quinn

Director and Optometrist

I have 30 years of experience in a wide variety of different types of Optical practices and have been a fully qualified Optometrist since 1998. I met Matt (my business partner) many years ago at City University, where we both studied for our Optometry Degree. We have remained friends ever since and took the decision to become business partners.

We purchased Robinson Opticians in July 2023, prior to which, I worked at the practice carrying out sight tests and contact lens appointments, covering Mrs Robinson’s days off. I have always found that there is something very special about the practice, it always feels like it is more than just an ‘Opticians’. It is part of a community, a high street that is almost all independent shops and I cherish having a team that pride themselves on giving every patient the highest level of care and service.

When I’m not at the practice, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, taking my dog on long walks in the woods and keeping myself fit with running and gym training.

Matt Smee

Director and Optometrist

I have over 35 years of experience as an Optometrist, with more than 20 of those years as a business owner, dealing with customers and maintaining those relationships.

I started out as Dispensing Optician and went on to complete a degree in Optometry at City University. I have significant experience working for the well-known high street Opticians. Locum Optometrist work gave me a good insight into the operations and footprints of a variety of Opticians.  I was also responsible for developing a successful Independent Home Visiting business.

In recent years my focus has been on offering friendly and high-quality services as an Independent Optician. To complement this, I provide Home Visiting services across Kent, West Sussex and East Sussex.

When I’m not working, I’m running my son around to various clubs and spending time with my partner. I enjoy taking a rest once a year for a summer holiday to recharge.

Paul O’Hara

Part-Time Optometrist

I am proud to be part of the team at Robinson’s opticians as a part-time Optometrist. I graduated as an Optometrist in Dublin in 2007 and have since gained extensive experience working in both high-street and independent practices. This has allowed me to develop a well-rounded approach to eye care, ensuring that each patient receives a thorough and professional examination tailored to their individual needs.

One of the things I love most about working here is the welcoming and supportive environment created by both the owners and the team. The practice is equipped with state-of-the-art technology, enabling us to perform comprehensive eye examinations with the highest level of precision. This means we can detect and manage a wide range of eye conditions, ensuring the best possible care for our patients.

Since joining the practice, I have been warmly welcomed by the wonderful people of Steyning. It has been a pleasure to provide eye care to the community, and I look forward to continuing to help patients maintain healthy vision while offering the friendly, professional service they deserve.

Beatriz Marin

Part-Time Optometrist

I qualified as an Optometrist in Spain in 2001. My first job was in San Sebastian in the North of Spain. During my first three years in Optical I provided low vision services. I decided to continue my studies and qualified from London City University in 2007. Since then I have worked for many companies and independent Opticians. I enjoy all aspects of Optometry. I began working for Robinsons in May 24. From my first day, I enjoyed the feel and and warmth of a little village like Steyning. The team and patients are kind, warm and welcoming. This is key for me, it enables me to enjoy my job. When I am not at work I love spending time with my family. Exercising, cooking and decorating are my favourite hobbies.

Jessica Brown

FBDO Practice Manager and Dispensing Optician

I have worked in optics for over 25 years. I qualified as a Dispensing Optician in 2002 and have worked in Practice Management since 2003. I studied at City and Islington College in London for my diploma in Dispensing Optics. I have managed both large and small teams throughout a number of roles, in a variety of practice environments.

I joined Robinson Opticians in May 2024 because it offered me the opportunity to be part of a great team with access to high quality eyecare services and treatments. I enjoy being able to provide a more personal service to patients in a friendly, but professional environment. It is important to me that patients feel valued.

Having grown up in the local area, I have enjoyed seeing some familiar faces and meeting lots of new people. When I am not at work I enjoy spending time with my family, as well as walking, swimming, cooking and playing games.

Liz Saunders

Part-Time Business Manager

Having studied Business and Marketing at University, I continued using these skills working for various Law Firms and Banks in London. Commuting to London for 13 years didn’t leave time for much else. With a transferable skill set, I’ve since worked for a variety of smaller local businesses. I work from home because of childcare needs. Jo and Matt are always willing to support the team as best they can. We have a lovely team who are kind, friendly, helpful and motivated, which makes it easy to complete business tasks remotely. I don’t like the cold. Ideally, you’d find me working from a sunny beach somewhere, but instead, you’ll find me under an electric blanket!

Adam Sayers FBDO

Dispensing Optician

I have worked in Optics for more than a decade. I studied Biological Sciences at University, with the view of taking up an ecology/conservation role. After University I fell into a temporary role at an Opticians. I enjoyed it so much that I went on to study and qualify as a Dispensing Optician. I grew up in Mid Sussex, so I much prefer the rural lifestyle to the city.  When I’m not breaking my leg, I enjoy playing football. I also enjoy experimenting with and learning about technology and continue to maintain my interest in science and nature.

Candice Cardwell

Part-Time Dispensing Optician

I began working in Optics for an Independent Practice, 28 years ago, in West London.  During my years of gaining extensive experience as a Dispensing Optician, I took on the role of Practice Manager within an Independent Practice for 9 years.

Starting a family instigated my decision to work part time. I joined the Robinson’s team in August 2023.  I am very fortunate to work alongside a fantastic and highly knowledgeable team and enjoy building strong relationships with our patients. I enjoy working for Robinson Opticians, in particular because they are an Independent Practice, where there is a passion to meet the needs of patients. As part of my role, I very much appreciate frame styling and the fashion aspect of my work, whilst the role also allows me to develop my interest in Myopia control.

Reception/Optical Assistants

We have three lovely Reception/Optical Assistants who are kind, caring, bubbly, hardworking and more than happy to welcome and assist you within our practice. You’ll find Mel and Bee mostly available during the weekdays (with occasional weekends) to assist your needs and Charlotte, who you’ll regularly see on a Saturday.
